A Crofters life…

At long last my collection “A Crofters Life” is ready!

I am excited to launch this new collection. I am just about to add a gallery to the menu but in the meantime here I am featuring “Did you shut the gate?” I don`t think I need to explain what went on when the shepherd was out of the way. Let’s hope they wiped their feet on the way in!

A crofters life prints
Did you shut the gate? 8×10 Print

A lighthearted depiction of life on Highland & Island farms and crofts. I see the challenges facing rural crofting & farming communities. I have great admiration for those who live on the edges and struggle to make it work for them. And admiration of the many creative industries and artists that spring from these isolated places. Helping these communities deal with the challenges they face every day, and showing the diversity of work that supports our mainland and island communities.

“Did you shut the gate?” is available as a mounted 8x10in print @ £30 (mounted size is 10x12in approx). Each Print replicates the original artwork. Printed onto the same good quality 250gsm pinseal textured paper on which the original artwork was made.

It is also available as a greetings card, blank inside for your own message. From £2.99.

I will be adding more items to my Etsy shop over the next few days. If there is anything you would like that isn’t listed yet, let me know and I will list it for you.

Flock to the show Launch

After what seems like ages it is time to unveil the designs for the “Flock to the show” public art trail. There are around 40 sheep sculptures traveling around Scotland before meeting up again at the Royal Highland show 2023 for the Golden Shears event. You can follow their journey on the Royal Highland show’s Facebook page. There`s a link at the bottom of the page that will take you to their website. You can find all of the sheep and their artists there. They are a real riot of colour. Unusually, my design is monochrome and I had a bit of colour envy watching everyone else with their vibrant paintboxes.

“A Crofters Life” is a new collection of work. A humorous depiction of life on Highland & Island farms and crofts. Aiming to highlight the challenges facing rural crofting & farming communities. I have great admiration for those who live on the edges and struggle to make it work for them. And admiration of the many cottage industries that spring from these isolated places. Helping these communities deal with the challenges they face every day, and showing the diversity of work that supports our mainland and island communities. From the farming itself to the cottage industries and tourism that keep them afloat, providing a valuable lifeline. These resourceful communities meet their challenges and survive, but they need our support to put food on our tables.

I am in the process of making prints, cards & a collection of model packs for children (and the young at heart!) to colour & make. More designs are in progress and will be added to my Etsy shop and gallery as we go along. In the meantime, here`s a bit of a sneak peek!

Flock to the show

In January I was invited to get involved in a really exciting project with a fantastic & varied group of artists. The designs are under wraps at the moment until the launch date in March, but I can tell you about the event.

Coming soon – A Crofters Life, New Collection!

“Flock to the show” ” is a large-scale public art trail touring across Scotland to celebrate the return of Golden Shears to the Royal Highland Show in 2023. It will feature over 30 specially designed life-size sheep sculptures roaming around the country on a free discovery trail. I will add a map as soon as I have one so you can see if they will be visiting your area. Until then, here’s a link to the RHS Flock to the show webpage. https://www.royalhighlandshow.org/flock-to-the-show/

The flock will return to the Royal Highland Showground in time for this year’s show. so if you don’t see them near you, they can be seen together again then. Maybe see you there!

Colmcille 1500 & the pilgrim trails of Argyll

In 2021 I was awarded a Colmcille Heritage award for my work celebrating 1500 years since the birth of St Columba. I had spent time during lockdown wandering along the pilgrim/ drover road between Dunadd fort, Kilmartin Glen to Oban, and the isle of Iona.

The gallery below shows work that was inspired by the prehistoric and medieval stone carvings scattered around Argyll, in particular, Kilmartin Glen. It is such a rich area where you can find artifacts and monuments just laying around in the landscape. My concern was that these things are in danger from the wild weather and environmental damage as well as the number of visitors to the sites. Each year a little more of the detail of these carvings is lost to erosion. I wanted to preserve images of how they are now. to preserve at least that much for future generations. The stones depict some incredible carvings equal to the manuscript work in the Book of Kells that also has connections to this incredibly important place. The gallery below shows a collection of works inspired by pre-Christian sites and from the monastic brothers who followed in the footsteps of St Columba.
