Colmcille 1500 & the pilgrim trails of Argyll

In 2021 I was awarded a Colmcille Heritage award for my work celebrating 1500 years since the birth of St Columba. I had spent time during lockdown wandering along the pilgrim/ drover road between Dunadd fort, Kilmartin Glen to Oban, and the isle of Iona.

The gallery below shows work that was inspired by the prehistoric and medieval stone carvings scattered around Argyll, in particular, Kilmartin Glen. It is such a rich area where you can find artifacts and monuments just laying around in the landscape. My concern was that these things are in danger from the wild weather and environmental damage as well as the number of visitors to the sites. Each year a little more of the detail of these carvings is lost to erosion. I wanted to preserve images of how they are now. to preserve at least that much for future generations. The stones depict some incredible carvings equal to the manuscript work in the Book of Kells that also has connections to this incredibly important place. The gallery below shows a collection of works inspired by pre-Christian sites and from the monastic brothers who followed in the footsteps of St Columba.
